When water stands on the surface — sheeting across a flat backyard, pooling in the low corner, turning one spot into a shallow pond after every storm — the fix is a surface drainage system that catches the water and carries it somewhere it can actually go.

Surface water on flat, caliche ground

On the South Plains, surface water is a special problem because the two escape routes water normally has are both closed: it can’t soak in (caliche), and it can’t run off (no slope). So it just sits on top. Surface drainage here is about actively collecting that standing water and conveying it — by built-in fall or by pump — to a discharge off the lot.

What we install

  • Catch basins at the low points that collect standing water and feed it into a buried line.
  • Channel (trench) drains across driveways, patios, and gateways where a line of water needs intercepting.
  • Surface leveling and regrading to build the fall a flat lot doesn’t have, so water sheets toward the collection points instead of ponding.
  • A conveyance to a real outlet — daylight, an approved discharge, or a sump — because a catch basin with nowhere to drain is just a bucket.

Reading a flat lot

On flat ground, small elevation differences decide everything, so we shoot grades rather than eyeball them — an inch of fall you can’t see by looking is the difference between a yard that drains and one that doesn’t. We map where water collects, where it can be sent, and how to connect the two.

On flat ground, an inch is everything

Surface drainage in Lubbock lives or dies on grades most people can’t see. On a lot with real slope you can eyeball where water goes; on dead-flat ground, a one-inch difference over thirty feet decides whether a catch basin collects water or sits in a dry spot while the puddle forms somewhere else. That’s why we shoot grades with a level before we place anything — we’re designing to actual elevations, then building the small, deliberate falls that make a flat yard move water to where we can catch it. Guesswork on flat ground is how you end up with an expensive drain in the wrong place.

Surface or sub-surface? Many Lubbock yards need both — catch basins for the water on top and a French drain for the water trapped in the soil above the caliche. A free assessment tells you which, so you buy the right system, not the biggest one.
