A drain that used to work and doesn’t anymore is one of our most common Lubbock calls — and a lot of them failed for reasons specific to this ground. The good news: most are fixable once you know what actually went wrong.

Why Lubbock drains fail

When we dig up a failed drain here, it’s usually one of these:

  • No real outlet — the drain was built to “soak away” into ground that won’t take it (caliche), so it fills and sits. This is the number-one local failure.
  • Not enough fall — on flat ground, a drain built without carefully-built slope holds water and silt and eventually plugs.
  • No filter fabric — the gravel silted up with fines and the water can’t get through anymore.
  • Crushed or collapsed pipe — thin corrugated pipe buried shallow gets crushed.
  • A buried or blocked outlet — where there was an outlet, it got covered or grown over and the whole line backs up.

How we diagnose it

We start by finding where the water is supposed to go — because the most common local failure is that it was never given a real place to go. From there we check fall, look for crushed sections, and figure out whether the line silted up. Sometimes the repair is adding the outlet or sump the original lacked; sometimes it’s replacing a crushed run; sometimes the honest answer is rebuilding a section correctly so you’re not back here next year.

Fix it once

Our goal on a repair is the same as on a new install: build it so it keeps working — a real outlet, built-in fall, fabric in fine soils, and pipe that won’t crush. We’ll tell you plainly whether your drain is worth repairing or whether you’ll save money rebuilding the bad part right.

“It never worked from day one”

A surprising number of our repair calls aren’t about a drain that failed over time — they’re about a drain that never worked at all, because it was installed as if the ground would absorb the water. On caliche, a drain with no positive outlet is doomed from the first storm, no matter how neatly it was built. When we find that, the fix usually isn’t patching — it’s giving the system the outlet or the sump it needed all along. We’ll show you exactly why the original didn’t work, so you understand what you’re paying to correct and don’t repeat it.

Inherited a mystery drain? If there’s a pipe sticking out of the ground and no idea where it goes — or whether it goes anywhere — we can trace it, test it, and tell you what you actually have.
