Sometimes the best drainage isn’t a pipe — it’s the shape of the ground. On a flat Lubbock lot, grading and leveling build the fall the land never had, so water sheets away from the house instead of pooling wherever it lands.
The plains are so flat that many yards have no meaningful slope at all — water has no reason to go anywhere. Correcting that with proper grading, and cutting shallow swales to guide the flow, can solve a surprising number of drainage complaints with little or no pipe. It’s often the most cost-effective fix on a flat lot, and the foundation for everything else.
Grading here has to account for the hardpan below: you can reshape the topsoil, but you can’t count on water soaking away once it gets where you send it, so grading almost always works toward a collection point and a real outlet rather than just “spreading it out.” We build swales with enough fall to move real storm volume, seed or sod them to hold the soil, and connect them to wherever the lot can actually discharge.
Reshaping a flat lot doesn’t have to leave a raw dirt scar. A shallow swale seeded to grass disappears into the lawn; where flow is stronger, a rock-lined channel or a dry creek bed handles real storm water, resists erosion, and fits the water-wise, xeriscape style a lot of Lubbock yards already lean toward. Because low-water landscaping matters here, we’re glad to grade in a way that works with a drought-tolerant yard rather than against it — moving storm water to where it needs to go while keeping the yard something you actually want to look at.
